I wasn't too worried since my DD is so outgoing. In fact, upon seeing Pluto the moment we entered MK, she tore away from us and ran up to hug him. Thus skipping all the folks in line. I was embarrassed about the line skipping thing and chased after her, but Pluto had already turned to give her a big hug, and all the parents in line were understanding.

I believe we had watched some of the Disney planning DVD's to help emphasize the size of the characters, ....tho with my fearless kiddo, I don't think it was neccessary.

We didn't do anything.  The first time DS went (he was 3) he didn't want to go up to any of them.  We waiting in line to see Mickey but after 30 minutes he said he didn't want to wait and wanted to go ride Dumbo again instead.  He did hug Pluto but that's it (and that's only cause he was a dog---my DS is a Huge! dog fan).

Then we went to Chuck E Cheese a few times and he saw Chuck E. there.  After that he was just fine for characters this year (now he's 4).  He didn't want to wait in line for anyone...and again...only waited and hugged Pluto (aside from those at our breakfast..he was all over them).  I was worried he'd still be apprehensive but he wasn't.

Just don't force them!  If they shy away from any of the characters, then back off.  If you force it they might freak out and you'll have a screaming, terrified child on your hands!!!

Someone else suggested watching the Disney videos (free ones from vacation planning) and discussing how big they are with the people etc.

Well, I let the kids watch the sing-a-long videos especially the ones that featured the characters with kids at WDW. Like the Beach Party one, it has the WDW water parks and Campground one at Wilderness Lodge and Camp ground and then their is the famous, Disneyland fun one that has the kids riding the rides at DL with characters.

Now just because they are afraid on the characters you may get a different reaction to the "real" character, ie Cinderella, Prince.

Now my daughter, 4 just flipped out last week at my son's school when the school's mascot a tiger was out greeting the students. I asked her why because he was just like Tigger and she informed me that this tiger had bigger teeth than Tigger. But we have no problem with the characters at WDW. kids

We had Alex watch the Sing Along Songs as well (Disneyland Fun - 'it's a small world'), and let him play with my close to life-size Mickey and Minnie.

The first time he saw the two of them in person he went nuts, and has never stopped loving the characters.

I took my boys to goofys kitchen the first night we were there just to kinda surprise/show them where we were and what not.... my 4yr old, as soon as he saw pluto and goofy he was right there happy and giving hugs... where are my 2yr old was holding back very unsure.... the rest of the trip was pretty much the same DS4 loved them DS2 stood back! But saying that i should *** DS4 is VERY out going and loud, where as DS2 is more shy and quite.... i'm hoping that our next trip will be better since he will be 3 by then (he was only 1 last trip)and is starting to like the charecters more (mickey and buzz).... But i again am planning to take them to goofys to kinda easy in and start the fun (also judge how michael will be now). since i don't like to to parks the first day, dinner and dtd is a great starter to get you excited for the morning!!!

Ashley... waiting till i can go back to disneyland!!
