I just saw the new Little Mermaid musical last night.  It's in the testing stages right now and will eventually hit Broadway.  The show we saw last night may be cut shorter (eliminating a song or two) but I don't think it needs it!  It was WONDERFUL!!!!  If you have the chance to see it (I don't know where all it's going to be playing) I recommend going!  It was pretty pricey ($75 for mezzanine seats!) but we splurged for a friend's birthday and I'm glad I did!  The storyline is basically the same (a few additions to the storyline and a few things were left out.  A lot of the dialogue was the same but for the most part the entire thing was sung).  There are the familiar songs we know (though they are slightly different from the movie..words changed here and there, or tempo changed, or versus added) and a TON of new ones.  The actors all looked and sounded just like the movie characters (with the exception of Ursula who's voice wasn't as deep and she was good looking with "evil" makeup and hair).  The characters are not dressed up in suits (think Disney on Ice) but their costumes still represent fish/merfolk etc.  The transitions from boat/shore to 'under the sea' are fantastic!  It really seemed like you were underwater!  I could gush and gush about how great it was!!!  The scenery was fantastic.  The costumes were wonderful.  The actors were great (though Triton could have been more vocal-he was kind of quiet and hard to hear).  Flounder was so cute!  He was a boy of about 8 or 9.  Everyone (well, sea creatures) wore wheelies (or heelies or whatever they are called) so they would walk/dance...and then float away.  Very impressive.  I loved, loved, loved it!

Sounds great. Did you take your children? If so how did they like it?

Elaine went to see that show last week.  She is sick now, but said she will write a review.  Mynde, I would love to have yours as well, and any pics you can include!

Kristi - I do know that Linnea enjoyed it and she is 4.  Elaine will be able to give more info.

I did not take the kids.  It was a last minute decision to go (my friend had an extra ticket).  Joshua would not like it as it was a 'girl' play.  No cars...pirates...or dogs (not even Max)!  There was one part that was scary (Ursula/Ariel/Triton/Prince Eric fight scene) that goes black and then has tons of strobe lights and fighting and Ursula's hair (which is white and glows in the dark and is all standing on end) and mean face are highlighted in the strobes..a small 'explosion' and then Ursula is gone.  The whole thing lasted all of 20 seconds....but for a 4 year old (and their parents) it's an eternity!  After that there were several kids crying "I want to go home".  It was late though (by then it had to be close to 10:00) and at the end of the play when the kids are getting restless (naturally).  But then it goes all white and happy and dancing and singing.  Only one little boy continued to cry...and stayed in the theater...my friend (who has no kids) was annoyed but me...I'd have stayed in too!  After all, I wanted to see the end scene and I would have even if it was MY crying child!!!  But the majority of the playgoers were families so..there was lots of whispering and singing along.  Anyway!  If your child likes Little Mermaid...it's great!!!  There were kids of all ages there!  It was funny to see all the dancing in the seats to the songs during this play!

Sorry I've been out of it for a few days.

I LOVED Little Mermaid and Linnea (4.5 yo) loved it too. She sat through the entire play mesmerized. She never fidgeted or tried to talk to us.

If you've seen Beauty and the Beast you'll know that one was almost as if the animated movie came to life on stage. Lion King, on the other hand, was very abstract. Little Mermaid is somewhere in between.

I agree with Mynde that the transitions from under the sea to the land is absolutely fantastic, as is the effect of the ship on the water, and here you are seeing the two worlds as one scene. Ursula was my favorite. She had some fantastic songs and her costume was amazing.

There were two scary scenes: one when King Triton destroyed Ariel's collection and the other one was at the end when he and Ariel had to fight Ursula. Neither of these brief scenes rattled Linnea.

We were unable to get orchestra level tickets and sat in the loge (second balcony, there are three levels of balcony at this venue) and tickets were $45.00. I thought this play shows well regardless of your seat location.
