| | Has anyone seen this film. FIRST, before you do, remember that the original rating in America was NC-17 for it's graphic sex scenes. It is out on video now, in both an R-version and a NC-17 version. THIS IS NOT A MOVIE FOR CHILDREN... The movie is in Mandarin Chinese, and you have to read the subtitles, and a little background primer is needed to understand the story (particularily understanding Mrs. Mak, 3 years of time passing, and the Japanese control of China during WWII). This movie was banned in China (the Chinese had to go to Hong Kong to see it), and now the lead female actress in the movie is also blacklisted in China (China has pulled her Pond's facial cream commercials recently). I really enjoyed the movie. A love story of sorts, but some sick content (basically a rape scene also). You really have to think about this movie, in order to really feel whether you liked it or not (the ending will surprise you), and then you can discuss it. My wife has seen the movie within the last week, and we have discussed it the last couple nights. Just curious as to other peoples thoughts on the movie. |

| | But don't let the movie's reputation keep you from watching it. It is very well done, by Ang Lee, the same director who did Brokeback Mountain and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The dialogue is very fast, so you might find yourself reading it and not paying attention to the screen, but the story behind the whole thing (a spy story during WWII), and the surprise ending are worth it. You have to keep an open mind about this whole thing too, mostly because of the cultural differences (like the "rape", being that the woman was trying to become his mistress to gain information about his dealing (it's very evident she intended to have sex with him). I certainly recommend it, and it makes for some interesting discussions. Again there is both an R version and an NC-17 version, so if you are offended by the content, perhaps choose the R version. |

| I love WWII movies, so will definitely have to check it out. I have not rented a movie in forever, but will have to try that.

| I don't know if I could handle a rape scene, even if she did intend for it to happen. I can't stomach watching that......I had never heard of the movie before. Maybe I'll look into getting it and we'll just fast forward that scene, or I'll use that time for a potty break!

| What was that movie with Elizabeth Berkley as an exoctic dancer? There was a rape scene in that one too that I couldn't stomach. If I were to watch this movie, like you D - I would fast forward that part.

| Well, the "rape" scene is graphic, however taken in the context of the period and the story, it is difficult to assume it wasn't a willing act. Mrs. Mak was a spy trying to be a mistress to a corrupt Chinese official who was working with the japanese. I had this discussion with my wife, and really it is felt that this woman was doing her duty as a mistress. There is another scene in the movie where she actually loses her virginity for her part in the takedown of this man (she is supposed to be married, but in fact isn't). She does everything she had to do to get this guy-- and then the ending will twist the whole story. I saw the NC-17 version, but I am thinking the R version isn't as shocking in the sex scenes. Tink, are you talking about showgirls? Ironic you said that because I read that is the other motion picture originally NC-17.
The movie was released in limited theatres when it was out. The big thing is it is in mandarin Chinese, so you must use subtitles. You will have to read fast, because of how fast the dialogue is. I had to watch the movie and pause it a couple times and rewind and re-read. But the movie is a big Hollywood movie and has a unique story. |
