Toy Story Mania Review June 2008

We were very fortunate to be able to ride Toy Story Mania on our quick trip to Walt Disney World.  Since it was opening week we had our doubts we would be able to get on it but luck was with us.  This is an incredible attraction!

The queue is complete fun and games; including the very first audio-animatronic character that is able to converse with people in the queue.  What he says are not stock phrases – he is actually about to ask and answer question.  He can even pull off an arm or an ear and then put it back on.  This special audio-animatronic of course is a very large and bigger than life sized Mr. Potato Head.  If you use Fastpass for Toy Story Mania you will miss this part of the queue but you will see other fanciful things.  Candy Land hangs on the wall as with many other toys.  The rails for the line are larger than life Tinker Toys.  This queue is a child’s playground, and brings back memories for every adult.

Toy Story Mania is a ride for people who love games, people who love toys, competitive people, and even those who play for fun.  This is an attraction that is great for kids, and kids at heart.

Once you enter your ride vehicle you will put on your 4-D glasses and be shuttled off to a practice area.  This part of the ride is there to teach you had to use your ‘gun’.  Unlike the normal gun that has a trigger, this one has a pull.  You simply pull the round knob toward yourself to shoot.  When you release, make sure the cord goes all the way back in before pulling again for maximum effectiveness.

Toy Story Mania has six different screens (games) and you will rotate between them so that you see each screen.  You shooter has the ability to shoot paint, pies, rings and other fun items that will be used to score points.  Each screen is introduced by a specific character.  Bo Peep has one with balloon sheep.  The Green Army men have a game with moving plates.  Each game will have various items on the screen with point on them.  The lowest point total is 100, the highest is 5000.  Be sure to use the whole game area to maximize your score.

As each game ends there will be a countdown from 5 that is very catchy!  Once you have completed all of the games you will play a bonus game, regardless of your point total.

Toy Story Midway Mania is a highly addictive game to play.  Like Buzz Lightyear the more you go on this ride the better your scores will get.

There were three of us riding.  The oldest is 45 years old and the youngest is five.  Each of us loved this attraction and highly recommend riding Toy Story Midway Mania.  We were impressed by the bright colors, the abundance of toys in the queue and the characters we saw during the ride itself.  The ride vehicles are oversized and made us feel like we were as small as toys.  This is definitely a must see attraction!
